This is a picture of Dr. Mary Lynn PivenDr. Mary Lynn Piven has been awarded nearly $750,000 by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to expand a depression treatment program called Healthy IDEAS (Identifying Depression, Empowering Activities for Seniors).

An evidence-based program designed to treat depression in older adults, Healthy IDEAS empowers caregivers and older adults to recognize symptoms of depression, connects them with mental health providers, and gives them tools to help manage symptoms. Dr. Piven has already implemented the program in Orange, Alamance, and Chatham counties. With the Kate B. Reynolds funds, she plans to expand the program to an additional 9 to 15 counties. The expansion will make it easier for older adults who lack financial resources to gain access to quality care through existing case managers and outreach programs for older adults.

The grant is one of the largest ever awarded by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. One of the missions of the trust is to improve access to health care for low income residents of North Carolina and to invest in projects that promote wellness statewide.

The first trainings for the expanded program have been planned for the fall.
