Dean James W. Dean, Jr. Selected As Provost

Starting July 1, dean of the Kenan-Flagler Business School, James W. Dean, Jr. will begin his new role as executive vice chancellor and provost.

“Jim is an accomplished scholar and outstanding educator,” Chancellor-Elect Folt said in a statement. “He is respected widely for his visionary leadership of Kenan-Flagler Business School and for the innovative and interdisciplinary approaches he takes to ensure excellence in research, education and public service. As the chief academic officer, his deep knowledge of the University’s strengths across schools and commitment to providing an outstanding education for our undergraduate, graduate and professional students will assist me in engaging the entire community in building a bright future.”

Dean Dean is known not only for his leadership at the business school, but also for his scholarship on organizational behavior. He has published studies in numerous top academic and business journals, and he has served as program director for the National Science Foundation research program “Transformations to Quality Organizations,” a joint project of the federal government and private-sector companies.

Dean and alumni distinguished professor Kristen Swanson, RN, PhD, FAAN, chaired the committee that selected Dean for the position. “The search committee committed ourselves to two clear goals. The first was to gather input widely to create a case statement for an ideal executive vice chancellor and provost. The second was to recruit the individual best suited to serve in that role.  It feels great to have accomplished both goals.”
