Norma Hawthorne Set to Retire in December

Norma Hawthorne, who came to UNC Chapel Hill as the SON’s director of advancement in 2001, will retire after a 30-year career in higher education.  “These last 10 years have been some of my most fulfilling and valuable.  I have helped make a lasting contribution to nursing education, practice and science by securing funding to support students, faculty and programs,” Hawthorne says.  “There is no better way to retire than to know that one has made a huge difference in people’s lives.” During the Carolina First Campaign Hawthorne and her colleague Anne Webb raised $15.8 million for the SON and over the course of the last 10 years more than $20 million.  The endowment funds have nearly doubled in value, providing for more scholarship support.  In her role as executive director of the SON Foundation, Inc., Hawthorne worked with a group of dedicated volunteers who offered important advice and made leadership gifts.  She is grateful to everyone for giving her the opportunity to be associated with the Light on the Hill – The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – and our outstanding School of Nursing.
