SON to Develop Dedicated Education Unit at Rex Healthcare

Beverly Foster, PhD, RN

Beverly Foster, Renee Hill, and Marilyn Oermann have received a Clinical Site Development grant from Wake AHEC to develop a dedicated education unit (DEU) in partnership with Rex Healthcare. A DEU is a model of clinical education that partners a school of nursing and health care agency. The unit at Rex Healthcare will be the first DEU in North Carolina and will serve as a clinical site in the capstone nursing course (N590).

The DEU will provide a site for nursing students to receive clinical teaching. A School of Nursing faculty member will facilitate learning by supporting students and ensuring they achieve course objectives while nurse clinicians and other staff on the unit will be prepared educationally for their role as clinical teachers. With the grant funding, the SON team will also develop the process for establishing dedicated education units in health care settings throughout North Carolina, evaluate the outcomes of the unit, and develop supporting educational materials. Students, faculty, and unit personnel will partner in activities that improve quality of care, patient satisfaction, and other outcomes.
