Nursing in the Media: Nurses’ Role in the Future of Health Care

The report “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” released by the Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has brought national attention to nursing. It recommends that nurses work to the full extent of their education, be full partners with physicians and other health care professionals in redesigning US health care, commit to a lifelong career of learning, and that attention be paid to assuring the nursing workforce is sufficient in size and preparation to meet the needs of society. The New York Times article Nurses’ Role in the Future of Health Care offers some excellent perspective on this report.
