How can I thank you?
There are times when a nurse may be asked by a patient or a family member, “How can I thank you?” You may be caring for an older family member, a child, or a patient who has successfully recovered from an illness or surgery. In some circumstances, a patient may have passed and the family member(s)
may want to honor them and thank you, too.
The dilemma might be what do you say?
It is our calling and our professional responsibility to give care where it is needed, and a simple thank you is enough for the care we give. And that’s true.
Yet, there might be something more that a patient or a family member wants to do, and we need to provide them with that opportunity.
If this happens, and you are asked, “How can I thank you?” please consider this response:
“Wow, that is really thoughtful. If there is something more you want to do, please contact Norma Hawthorne at my alma mater, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, to discuss this. Her phone number is 919-966-4619 and her e-mail address is Norma_Hawthorne@unc.edu. Thank YOU so much.”
