Bequest Fulfills Alumnus’ Wishes to Make a Difference for Future Nursing Students
When Alan Novotny, BSN ’01, died suddenly after a short illness, we knew that he had included the School of Nursing in his will. When he notified us of his intent to leave a gift to the School, he said his greatest desire was to make a difference for future nursing students. After his estate went through probate, we learned that Alan’s gift of $93,580 was unrestricted. That meant that the Dean could use the funds at her discretion for educational priorities where
there was no state funding. Novotny’s gift was an extraordinary one because we are now able to meet immediate needs to update learning technologies in our classrooms. This will give us the capability to offer our outstanding nursing education to current and future students in undergraduate and graduate programs who are working and learning far from Chapel Hill. We want to give thanks to Alan Novotny who made this extraordinary gift. Unrestricted gifts allow us the flexibility to make choices and decisions about what will best serve our students and faculty in a dynamic environment.
